ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea can affect the cardiovascular system, which can make alterations on complete blood cell count (CBC). In this study, we analyzed the correlation between the Apnea- Hypopnea Index and complete blood cell count that can be readily performed on outpatients. Materials and Methods: We included a total of 47 patients, all of whom underwent polysomnography, anthropometric measurements (including body mass index), and survey of daytime sleepiness using Epworth sleepiness scale. We sought to correlate the severity of obstructive sleep apnea with the CBC count. Results: The mean platelet volume (MPV) of patients with severe sleep apnea was significantly higher than that of patients with mild apnea; no other correlation was statistically significant. In multiple regression analyses, the apnea/hypopnea index correlated with both the BMI and the MPV. Conclusions: MPV, which is easily measured in outpatients, can help to measure the treatment outcome in obstructive sleep apnea patients. (J Clinical Otolaryngol 2016;27:281–285)
