RCT(randomized controlled trials)에 의한 증례 이용의 중요성을 강조한 영국출신의 역학자 아치볼트 코크레인(Professor Archibald Leman Cochrane, CBE FRCP FFCM : 1909~1988)의 이름에서 유래. 현재 영국의 국제적인 비영리조직인 ‘The Cochrane Collaboration’의 contributor들에 의해 리뷰 후, Wiley-Blackwell을 통해 전세계에 서비스 하고 있다.
