요약

악성종양 환자에서 세균에 의한 심한 감염 증을 앓고 나서 종양의 크기가 줄어들거나 혹 은 종양이 없어지는 현상은 18세기 말에 이미 알려져 있었다. 1893년에 William Coley9)가 악 성 종양환자에 게 연 쇄 상구균(streptococcus py-ogenes)의 내독소인 erysipelas toxin을 주사하 였을 때 주사부위에서 종양의 출혈성괴사가 일어나는 것을 관찰하였다. Coley’s toxin이라 고 알려진 세균 내독소에 의한 이러한 현상은 “내독소에 의한 출혈성 종양괴AKendotoxin-induced hemorrhagic tumor necrosis)”라고 종 양생물학에 알려졌다.
