ABSTRACT

Retropharyngeal hematoma is a very rare disease. Its clinical importance lies in its close proximity to the upper airway. Often emergency measures such as tracheotomy to secure adequate airway are required prior to the definitive treatment.

In a case reported here, a massive retropharyngeal hemorrhage developed subsequent to a fall down in a 71-year-old man. Airway obstruction necessitated a tracheotomy and the hematoma resolved after 20 days without surgical drainage.
