Abstract

Chronic paranasal sinusitis, one of the most common diseases in the area of otolaryngology, has been regarded as a chronic condition that may respond to conventional managements. Many patients remain symptomatic despite appropriate medical treatment. Rhinoscopic examination and plain paranasal sinus x-rays are not informative enough to correctly diagnose chronic paranasal sinusitis.

Forty three patients who did not respond to medical treatment and had symptoms and signs suggesting sinusitis were analyzed. Seventy nine(91%) ostiomeatal units out of 43 patients who were diagnosed as chronic sinusitis with OMU CT scan revealed pathologic changes by endoscopic examination. Thirty seven (86%) patients who underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery showed symptomatic improvement postoperatively.
