요약

인구의 고령화는 전세계적인 추세이며 이로 인해 이 비인후과를 방문하는 환자에서 차지하는 노인환자의 수도 점진적으로 증가 추세에 있고 65세 이상의 이비인 후과 노인환자 중에 이과영역의 환자가 차지하는 비중 이 가장 높다.¹⁾ 2011년 미국에서 조사한 바에 따르면 이 과적 문제로 외래 방문한 65세 이상의 노인 환자 중 가장 많은 질병은 감각신경성 난청이었으며，그 다음으로 이 명，메니 에르병，전정신경 염，양성돌발성두위변환성현 훈의 순이었다.²⁾ 노인에서의 이명의 유병률은 약 10% 이 상으로 보고 되고 있는데，실제 임상 혹은 생활에서 이명 을 경험하는 경우는 이보다 훨씬 많을 것으로 생각된다.³
