요약

1997년 홍콩에서 조류 인플루엔자 A(H5N1) 바이러 스에 의한 사람감염이 보고된 이후 WHO를 비롯한 세 계에서는 앞으로 닥칠 인플루엔자 대유행의 유력한 후 보로 이 바이러스를 주목하고 있었다. 그러나 21세기 첫 인플루엔자 대유행은 예기치 않게 2009년 4월 중순 미국에서 돼지에서 유래한 인플루엔자 A(H1N1) 바이 러스에 의한 감염이 소아에서 처음 확인되면서 시작되었 다.1) 신종 인플루엔자 A(H1N1) 바이러스는 돼지에서 유행하던 인플루엔자 바이러스가 유전자 재조합 또는 변이에 의하여 인체 감염 능력을 획득하게 되어 유행이 가능하게 된 것으로 여겨진다. 특히 조류 인플루엔자가 획득하지 못하였던 사람-사람 전파가 가능하였던 것이 이번 대유행의 중요 원인이 되었다.
