ABSTRACT

Background: Eosinophilia ia a characteristic feature of several chronic inflammatory airway disorders, such as allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, and nasal polyposis. Ecalectin seems to play an important role in the accumulation of eosinophils. The aim of this study is to investigate the expression of ecalectin in sinonasal diseases. Methods: Nasal polyps, allergic inferior turbinates, and normal inferior turbinates were enrolled in this study. Tissue and nasal secretion ecalectin mRNA were detected with RT-PCR and tissues were immunohistochemically stained using antibody against ecalectin. Results: Non-allergic nasal polys, allergic inferior turbinates expressed significantly large amount of ecalectin mRNA than normal inferior turbinates. But only the nasal secretion of allergic rhinitis patients contained ecalectin mRNA. Nasal tissues contained ecalectin immunoreactive cells in submucosal glandular cells. Conclusions: Although ecalectin is not the only eosinophil chemoattractant, in sinonasal diseases with eosinophilia may be influenced by the production of ecalectin.
