ABSTRACT

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a neurologic disease associated with varicella-zoster virus. It is characterized by the presence of zoster lesions around the auricle, external auditory canal, tympanic membrane or in the oropharynx and acute peripheral facial paralysis. In addition, Ramsay Hunt syndrome sometimes complicated by a disorder of the multiple cranial nerves. Especially acute vestibular neuritis is the disease of which etiology and pathophysiology are largely unknown. But viral infection and ischemia of the labyrinth and vestibular nerve are considered as general etiology. This article was suggested to support the viral infection rather than the ischemic theory. We report a case about a 56-year-old female with Ramsay Hunt syndrome complicated with cranial nerve V, VII, VIII with a review of literature. (J Clinical Otolaryngol 2006;17:128-133)
