Hippocrates가 처음으로 후두가 마비된 경우 생명에 위협을 줄만한 심각한 오연(aspiration)이 발생할 수 있음을 보고한 이래로 1세기에 살았던 Galen은 처음으 로 미주 신경과 반회 후두 신경의 주행을 해부학적으로 확인하였다.¹⁾
