ABSTRACT

We analysed 31 cases of bronchial foreign body patients who visited ENT department, Catholic Medical Center from January 1984 to December 1989.

The results were as follow

  1. Among 31 cases, males were 24 and females were 7, and 21 of the total patients were under the age of 2 years (67.7%).

  2. The locations of foreign bodies were left main bronchus in 19 cases, right main bronchus in 14 cases and bilateral in only 1 case.

  3. The kinds of foreign bodies were plants such as peanuts or nuts in 21 cases (67.7%) and metals in 3 cases (9.7%).

  4. In duration of lodgement, it was within 24 hours in 9 cases, over 4 days in 15 cases and over 3 months in 1 case.

  5. In mode of treatment, there were bronchoscopic removal in 28 cases, lobectomy in 1 case and spontaneous removal by coughing in 2 cases.

  6. In complications,there were 7 cases of pneumonia and 2 cases of laryngeal edema, but one case died because of pulmonary edema after bronchoscopy.
