ABSTRACT
Background and Objectives: The diagnosis and treatment modalities of cervicogenic dizziness have not been well known to otologic area. We performed this study to analyze the clinical characteristics of the patients diagnosed as cervicogenic dizziness and to present diagnostic approach and the results of treatment method for those patients. Materials and Method: Forty-one patients who were diagnosed as cervicogenic dizziness were included in the study. The assessments were based on history, physical examination, audiometry, vestibular function test and cervical spine roentgenogram. After combination treatment with medicine and physical therapy, therapeutic responses were measured by verbal analog scale and dizziness handicap inventory (DHI). Results: Almost 80% of the patients complained unsteadiness. Most of the patients showed accompanying headache and eyeball discomfort with tender points in trapezius muscles. Sixty seven percent of the patients showed the abnormal findings in cervical spine roentgenogram. Most of the patients (94%) showed the improvement in their symptoms and in DHI after treatment (p<0.01). Conclusion: Understanding the clinical characteristics, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for cervicogenic dizziness might be helpful to manage the patients with dizziness. More objective diagnostic tool should be developed. (J Clinical Otolaryngol 2007;18:54–59)
