요약

영화 ‘미션 임파서블3’를 보면 주인공이 전송된 사진 파일로 3D printer를 활용하여 전송된 사진 파일 속 사람 얼굴과 동일한 입체 가면을 만드는 장면이 나온다. 그리고 이를 바라본 대부분의 사람들은 아마도 단순한 CG처리나 영화가 만들어낸 흥미로운 상상 정도로 여겼을 것이다. 그러나 이제 3D printing은 더 이상 영화 속 상상이 아닌 현실이 되었으며, 2014년 글로벌 컨설팅 기업인 맥킨지는 ‘2025년 영향력 있는 12대 기술’ 중 하나로 3D printing을 선정하고 경제적 파급효과는 최소 2300억 달러에서 최대 5500억 달러로 전망하였다. 또한, 유럽기술영향평가국은 2015년 3월 향후 우리의 삶을 변화시킬 10가지 기술 중 하나로 3D printing을 선정하였다. 그렇다면 3D printing 기술이란 무엇인가? 간략하게 이야기하자면 3차원의 입체물을 만들어내는 기술이다.
