요약

줄기세포란 자기 재생(self renewal)과 특정 세포로의 분화가 가능한 세포를 말한다. 모든 세포의 근간이 된다 는 뜻에서 간(幹)세포, 줄기세포, 만능세포, stem cell 이라고도 불린다. 줄기세포는 그들 자신이 체내의 어느 특정 위치에서도 특정 조직 또는 세포로 정확히 대체할 수 있는 독특한 특징을 지닌다. 그리고 이들은 특정세포 형태의 전구 세포를 만들 수도 있다. 또한 잠복 형태로 조직 내에 존재하면서 특정한 상황에서 줄기세포의 활 성으로 늙거나, 죽거나, 혹은 손상된 세포를 대체하여 조 직의 기능을 유지한다. 이러한 특성을 이용하여 일반적 인 치료로는 완치가 어려운 난치성 혈액질환, 면역학적 질환, 그리고 중추신경계 질환 등에서 줄기세포를 이용 한 치료가 활발하게 이루어지고 있고, 괄목한 만한 성과 가 보고되고 있다.
